I definitely found it interesting that there is not a specific category for Visual Literacy in the Common Core ELA State Standards. I see why it may be overlooked as I think teachers know that students often learn how to make visual connections outside of the classroom. This is not a sound way of teaching though because as teachers we can never assume that students know about the content that you teach them, this creates a stereotype in the classroom that will make students not want to speak up if they have a question. I think visual literacy can be used in most of these categories of CCSS for ELA. Adding any sort of material (Visual or not) that adds helpful way for the students to understand the material is helpful. Providing presentations and visual materials like pictures or drawings that might reflect instances that connect more with the student. I did however find some requirements in the CCSS related to visual literacy in the section "Integration of knowledge and Ideas CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.8.7" "Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using different mediums (e.g., print or digital text, video, multimedia) to present a particular topic or idea." This would require the students to not only be able to understand material through visual literacy but to also discuss why or why not it would be beneficial to them.
The NES text pages 136-140 talked about using visual literacy in the classroom. More specifically the ways in which visual literacy can be taught. I found it interesting that while the CCSS doesn't specifically mention visual literacy, there is a test used by at least eight states in which specifically talks about visual literacy and the importance of it in the classroom. in my k-12 education I found that almost all my teachers (except the real old ones) would take advantage of technology, often providing PowerPoints and visual representations for their lessons. In my Intro to Education class, the professor showed us a study that proved having a simple picture or phrase to visualize while you are teaching a lesson allows the student to have something more easier to look back on for information recall. I think presenting information through visual literacy has a positive affect in all aspects of learning and allows the students to broaden their thinking in the ways the information pertains to their lives.
