In reading the Common Core Standards I found It to be helpful as guidelines to follow as I come to understand what goals I need to set for my students. I think the standards that are set will allow students to be ready for college after the completion of high school. One thing I noticed is that as the grades went on the standards kind of stayed the same and they would just insert (See specific expectations here). I feel like this might make it easy for teacher to become complacent in their students progress thus far as they have already met the general requirements. Maybe this is put in place so that the students can hone in on their skills? Either way, I think its a good set of core standards for teachers to follow if they want their students to be college or career ready after high school. One thing I wish I could have had integrated into my schooling is more presentation to a audience at a younger grade level. If I would have started presenting at a younger age I feel like I would have less presentation anxiety and feel more comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people. Most college classes require their students to present information and I feel that I was not adequately trained to do so.
The NES reading was informational in that it explained the necessary steps needed to become a good listener and involved member of discussions. I think this reading relates back to the 2nd blog post "Brookfields "Discussion as a Way of Teaching" because while Brookfield explains the different ways to discuss, this NES reading explains what to focus on during these different discussion practices. By Focusing on pitch, posture, movement, eye contact etc. the speaker can learn to fully engage its audience in discussion and allow for the listeners to understand and come up with a fully though out response. As a future teacher, one of the things I'm most excited about it being able to practice my speaking and listening skills every day and see improvement in myself as well as my students. I believe that communication is the most important things to learn and the better you get at it the easier life will be.
